I am fortunate to be able to do a daily meditation with a Daily Mindfulness app. The series I’m presently enjoying is with Melli O’Brien called Strength from Stillness.
This morning O’Brien spoke of our need as human beings to tame the mind. She says that the human mind is a double-edged sword. Our mind has a dark side which hurts our inner world, feeding us limiting beliefs. She says our mind evolved from hunter gatherers. Unfortunately, our minds are still stuck in there, still on the lookout for dangers and threats. Even if everything is okay, we worry about our health, relationships, finances, work, etc. our survival depends on being part of a tribe. But, now we compare ourselves to a huge amount of people, not just our tribe. We’re never enough. We constantly want more, even when it’s no longer necessary. We are seeking to be happy, to thrive. We must train our minds, learn to be compassionate with ourselves.
In order to learn to be satisfied, we must still our inner talk, be in the moment, the present! When we meditate, we must acknowledge our thoughts and be compassionate with our thoughts. We must thank our thoughts and focus on our breathing.
