Dr. Jody Carrington posted a most timely article on the importance of empathy at this time when so many are marginalized and hurting. I totally agree with her article.
The dirty truth is that those who need it most are often the most difficult to empathize. However, empathy does not mean we have to agree with others. It means that, as Covey said, “ Seek first to understand and to be understood.”
It has been my experience, as an educator, behavior specialist, guidance Counsellor, and parent that those who are difficult to empathize with are actually hurting. All the more reason to listen and seek to understand.
