Leadership First posted an interesting quote about the importance of empathy and support for anyone who has made a mistake.
He quotes Jack Welch, “When people make mistakes, the last thing they need is discipline. It’s time for encouragement and confidence building. The job at this point is to restore self-confidence. I think ‘piling on’ is one of the worst things any of us can do.”
I totally agree! Diane Gossin states, It’s okay to make a mistake, It’s how we learn.” Studies show that mistakes are a critical part of learning. In Growth Mindset, they have done numerous experiments with students about making mistakes. All of them show that if a student believes mistakes are part of learning and growth, they learn better and with a positive growth mindset. Those who think mistakes are bad, give up easily and prevent learning.
So, let’s support each other when we make mistakes, not only our students but also our employees and in our homes.
