Thanks to J. C. Maxwell for the reminder that character is essential. Maxwell spoke of the fact that character counts. Character is on our inside. Reputation is on the outside. If you’re bigger on the inside, it will show up on the outside. If you’re bigger on the outside, it will wither away since it has no foundation.
Character doesn’t make you a great leader but lack of character will destroy you as a leader. Character is about your values, the person you want to be. How do you want to be remembered?
Think of any great leadership qualities that you have experienced and more than likely you can name the valuable character traits of that leader. Great leaders lead from deep values and beliefs. Although their values are not always popular, they stick to them even though it doesn’t make them popular. Their character guides them in their leadership style.
Think of a great leader and you will be able to name their values.
