Yesterday I had my first watercolour lesson. I was nervous but I told myself that it’s okay to make mistakes. And I did! However, I am still okay this morning.
I grew up with the belief that it’s not okay to make mistakes, but I have discovered that it not only is important to make mistakes but it’s the best way to learn. And, I teach this when I give workshops. Yet, I have to admit that I am still working on this concept for myself. That’s partly why I decided to take watercolour lessons. To work on my core belief that it’s okay to make mistakes.
I think we have a real challenge to accept ourselves for our fallible human nature and truly believe it’s okay. We can teach any concepts we want but we must trust ourselves to learn from our mistakes. Once we can do that, we can learn new skills with enjoying the process.
