Persistence is the key to independence. Gavin McCormack states that after 22 years of teaching, he has discovered that the most important learning objective and essential skill is the skill of independence.
We all know that boredom invites creativity! When children are bored they think outside the box, create games, worlds and even universes that exercise their creative muscles and inspire big picture thinking at home and at school.
When teachers create educational voids in their timetables, students get an opportunity to do nothing but what they want to do to do. Give them time to look around for familiar materials they understand and enjoy. They’ll explore them, select one, take it to their table and start to use it, put it back, choose another one and start to record their findings independently. Independence is born and inaction. The student is learning the skill of independence!
